What is Ultra Microfiber?
Having specialized in cleaning products for over 30 years, European manufacturers are the leaders in microfiber design and development. It is common knowledge that Northern Europe is very environmentally conscious, having banned the use of many chemicals. Companies there initially developed the technology in the early 80's along with a special process to manufacture a fabric with a very thin weave called ultra microfiber. When a high-quality ultra microfiber is combined with the right knitting/weaving process it creates an extremely efficient highly absorbent cleaning material. The microfiber cleaning system was designed as an effective alternative way of cleaning.
Many people are looking for non-toxic, chemical free, green cleaning methods and ways to reduce allergy sensitivity while cleaning. Microfiber products provide the answers for those concerns. These cloths and mops work wonderfully along with any other eco-friendly or homemade cleaning solutions.
How is microfiber manufactured?
Microfiber used for effective cleaning products are composed of very fine split fibers of polyester and polyamide (nylon blend). Most microfiber products are made of 80% Polyester/ 20% Polyamide or 70%/ 30%. The higher quality cloths of 50%/50%,are harder to find. There are many microfiber products on the market, but for microfiber to be the most effective as a high quality cleaning textile, the fiber must be split during the manufacturing process to produce spaces in each fiber. Manufacturers use a splitting machine to make the ultra microfiber. Because of this expensive specialized machinery, these microfiber products are a bit more costly, but have a much higher quality. The fibers are split to create microscopic hooks with numerous wedges, rather than the rounded threads found in ordinary cloth. Microfiber is 100x finer than human hair, and 20x finer than a strand of silk. Microfiber is defined as a fiber that is less than 1 denier or decitex per thread. Denier or den is a unit of measure and is often used to describe the size of a fiber or a filament: (9000 meters of a one-denier fiber weighs only one gram). The type of denier for microfiber cloths is an important feature to understand the quality thickness and best cleaning performance for the products durability. High quality ultra microfiber used for cleaning is often 0.5 denier or smaller. If microfiber isn't split during manufacturing, it's weave would only be that of a very soft cloth.
How microfiber works:
It's the split fiber and individual filaments that do the work cleaning. This allows the cloth to pick up and hold dust, dirt, grease, oil, and absorb liquid better than other fabrics. If you were to look at the cross section of split microfiber fabric under extreme magnification, it would look like an asterisk.
During cleaning, the wiping motion enables these millions of wedge-shaped fibers to trap and absorb particles of dirt, removing them without damaging the surface. Traditional rags move or push dirt and dust from one place to another. They are not designed to pick up dirt particles as efficiently, due to the rounded surface of threads. Microfiber is an effective cleaning tool because their electrostatic properties attract dust. The fibers are positively charged, dirt and dust are negatively charged so they are attracted to microfiber like a magnet. The dirt remains locked deep inside the cloth, enabling you to continuously clean without releasing dirt back on to the cleaning surface. The dirt is retained in the material until it is washed reducing the need for frequent rinsing. The cleaning surface will become so clean that new dirt will not be attracted as easily. This is what makes the microfiber cloths unique.
Microfiber is highly absorbent, holding up to 4 - 7 times its weight in dirt, grime and liquid. This feature also makes them great for cleaning up spills. The absorbency of microfiber is effective for cleaning glass and windows. This will allow you to cut down on the use of disposable cleaning products like paper towels. Water on the cleaning surface will evaporate more quickly, resulting in faster drying times compared with cotton. Because microfiber doesn't produce lint, you can dry surfaces to a lint-free and streak-free shine.
The cloths are not treated with any cleaning agents. Although the cloth does not disinfect, independent tests and studies have been done to prove that using high quality microfiber materials to clean a surface removes a higher percentage of bacteria (e-coli) from surfaces compared to conventional cleaning cloths. The ultra microfibers are so small that they can collect almost invisible dirt that would be impossible for any other rag to detect. By using microfiber products, you will discover that you can remove more dirt, thus cleaning surfaces better than ever before. Traditional cleaning methods using chemicals leave chemical residue on the surface, which will attract more dirt. This will contribute to the growth of bacteria and mold. The attributes of split microfiber makes it an effective green cleaning product. By using them often, you maintain a healthy indoor environment.
